Janet Jackson was honored at the 2018 BMI Awards for her contributions to R&B and Pop Music, and a star-studded group of friends and young performers was put together to give Janet her honors. Missy Elliot and Ciara opened things up by introducing her and her performers.
‘Empire’ actor and musician, Jussie Smollet performed “That’s The Way Love Goes.” H.E.R came on next to perform Janet Jackson’s “Anytime, Anyplace.” Justine Skye performed “Let’s Wait A While.” Two of the most notable performances happened when Normani performed “Pleasure Principle and Teyana Taylor performed “I Get So Lonely.”
Overall, this was an amazing show and one that Janet deeply deserved. For so many years, Janet and her impact on music have been overlooked and undermined, particularly after the Super Bowl fiasco. It’s just so heartwarming to see her getting her flowers in full! It’s also very telling about who Janet is that she enlisted the talents of so many budding young stars to honor her, and it was so refreshing to see them all. Normani was amazing, Teyana was spectacular, Justine sang beautifully, as did H.E.R – my heart is full. We love you Janet!
